Torrevieja itself is situated dense the sea and is surrounded by two large natural salt lakes which are the largest of Europe.
These lakes are particularly popular with people who suffer from heart problems, reuma, artritis or asthmatic disorders where from is said that the "healing strengths" of the salt lakes helps you get rid of the pain caused by these sicknesses.
Tourism is the main source of income, because in the summer the total population can run to 650,000 people. In former days the salt production from the salt lakes (Salinas the Torrevieja) was the most important activity.
